SAN FRANCISCO — Where I last left off, in northeastern Colorado, I was about to take a few days off to relax in Boulder, Colo. I used part of that down time to catch up on writing from earlier in my trip. Then I had to get back on the road.
Writing, researching, driving long distances and making stops along the way aren’t an ideal mix. But overall, this has certainly been a grand trip.
A quick and timely preview: I’m happy to report that I did indeed reach Lincoln Park in San Francisco, the western terminus of the Lincoln Highway. That’s where, in front of the Legion of Honor, the Lincoln Highway Association’s 100th Anniversary Tour kicked off its western car caravan on Sunday morning. (I arrived at the tail end of the departure of the vintage cars just in time to grab a few quick photos. Then poof! The Lincoln Highway celebrants disappeared into the fog.)
The tour’s eastern counterpart left Times Square in New York City and will meet the western caravan in Kearney, Neb., for the Lincoln Highway Association’s centennial celebration. (Safe travels to all those making the trek to Kearney!)
Over the course of the next week or so, I’ll continue to post daily and dig out of my backlog of posts to document my travels along the highway from Wyoming westward to San Francisco. (That will include my trek up a mountain to check out bristlecone pine trees that are more than 3,000 years old.)
But wait, there’s more! I’m getting ready to head back east via Amtrak and will be stopping for a few days in Denver and Chicago. I’ll be writing about some places in those cities, which are situated on Lincoln Highway auxiliary routes. Later this summer, I’ll likely check out some places on the New York to Philadelphia leg of the highway, though I’ve driven parts of that route many times before.
And as I’m doing that, I hope to make some modifications to this website and introduce some mapping to better illustrate the where of my travels along the highway.
So although my westward roadtrip along the Lincoln Highway has concluded, I’ll still be exploring, researching and writing about the places along the way. Thanks for your continued reading!
